Trainers of the Month at The Sports Club/LA
Details:
The Club would like to highlight a few of our trainers. Please see below to choose which one of these trainers can help you reach your health and fitness goals. Single sessions and packages are available.
- Kristen Tapping, NASM-CES - Kristen recently relocated to San Francisco from NYC to continue her Personal Training career while at the same time pursue a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Her career in fitness started in '07 with certifications in National Academy of Sports Medicine, IM=X Pilates, Integrated Flexibility Training, and Pre/Post Natal Training. Kristen creates individualized fitness programs for each client and uses a combination of strength and functional training, cardiovascular efficiency, and Pilates to achieve the best results. She keeps the workouts fun and to the point. Kristen's client, Michael P. says: "Kristen has been an outstanding trainer for me, who pushed me to achieve the results I was looking for. I used to be so bored of my workouts at the gym, but she makes it fun, is all business, which is exactly what I needed! She showed me how to improve my eating & workout habits, which dramatically changed the way I felt and looked!"
- Will Thomas, ACE - Eleven years ago, no one could have imagined Will Thomas as a personal trainer. He says his pantry was full with yellow cupcakes, potato chips and fruit punch. He hated exercising, and working out was never on the agenda. Overweight and feeling miserable, one day he promised himself to spend the rest of his life giving his body the respect it deserves. For the past ten years, he has changed not only his own life, but has helped other people to live healthier as well. Will's entry into the EAS Body for Life Competition had not only given him a new body, but it gave him the confidence to believe that we're all capable of making changes in our lives and reaching our goals. Will understands the challenges of making a lifestyle change-because he's lived his own personal experience with overcoming weight problems and motivation. An ACE certified personal trainer since 2002, he continues to educate himself with new and innovative ways to train and motivate clients of all fitness levels. "Remember if there is a Will, there is a Way!"
- David Smith, NASM-CES - "Look good, feel good." With 10 years of experience in the fitness industry, David has worked with a variety of athletes, professionals, and special populations. Certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, specializing in Corrective Exercise, he continues to learn and expand his knowledge base on a regular basis. David has a sincere passion for conditioning, weight lifting, yoga, running, and basketball. He believes the best results come from a balanced approach to exercise. David loves creating programs for clients, incorporating their interests so they can better reach their health and fitness goals.

Learning to Swim or Preparing for a Triathlon?
Details:
With fall triathlons around the corner there is a lot to think about when it comes to preparing for the swim portion of the race. Here are a few tips to consider as you get ready for the big day.
- Make sure you have the right gear - this includes a swim cap, goggles, wetsuit (only if the water temperature is below 78 degrees), swimsuit or tri suit, sunscreen and towel.
- Include sighting drills in your training - as in picking up your head regularly to make sure you're headed in the right direction. It is easy to get off course in the swim portion so it is important to check every so often that you are still on course.
- Practice breathing on both sides which will help if you have waves or choppy water that make it difficult to breath on the side you're used to. It will also help you develop an even stroke.
- In freestyle, the strongest part of your stroke is the last part so make sure not to pull your arm out to early. Finish the pull all the way back to your leg.
- Make sure to relax! Swimming in open water can be stressful so make sure to pause, look around, enjoy your environment, and most importantly, have fun!
The Sports Club/LA offers swimming classes that can help to refine your stroke or the swim portion of a triathlon. And even the most experienced swimmers can benefit from a stroke check-in session with a swimming instructor who can offer stroke refinement tips or suggest new drills to increase your power and endurance.
