Efficient Exercises

Details:

Aaron Swan, Advantage Trainer, at The Sports Club/LA – Boston, shares valuable tips on how to make the most of your exercise time. With an hour a day dedicated to health and fitness, we need to create the largest calorie expenditure possible. Most programs involve 40 minutes on an elliptical/treadmill, and exercises such as biceps curls, lateral pull downs, triceps rope press downs and crunches. These are examples of being inefficient with your time at the Club. It is better to do large compound or multi-joint exercises, such as squats, deadlifts, chin-ups, presses, rows and lunges. If you complete an hour of squatting, or pressing and pulling with short rest periods, your body will continue burning calories after you stop exercise. Here is an example workout:

10 minutes warm-up with joint mobility and flexibility

  • Squat with Dumbbells (4 sets of 6-10 reps)
  • Rest 45 seconds
  • Pushups with feet elevated (4 sets 8-10 reps)
  • Rest 45 seconds
  • Chin-up with band assistance, if needed (4 sets of 8-10 reps)
  • Rest 45 seconds and repeat above three exercises.
  • Single leg Romanian Deadlift with Dumbbells (4 sets of 8-10 reps)
  • Rest 45 seconds
  • Standing single arm shoulder press (4 sets of 8-10 reps)

Information:

Please visit the Fitness Desk.

Healthy Recipe of the Month

Details:

Nina's Hearty White Bean & Butternut Squash Soup

Nina DiBona, RD, shares a healthy fall recipe. As the leaves start to change, so can our attitude about healthy foods! The notion that eating healthy equals flavorless is kicked to the curb with this hearty, and delicious butternut squash soup recipe. In just one bowl you get a nutrient packed meal filled with vitamin A, C, calcium, iron, fiber and protein! So grab a spoon and dig into filling and guilt-free fall favorite.

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15.5oz) can white beans (rinsed and drained)
  • 1 lb butternut squash (cubed)
  • 2 Tbs light Smart/Earth balance butter
  • 18 oz vegetable broth
  • 1 med onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 6 oz plain 0% Greek yogurt
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch pepper
  • Cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Rinse and drain beans and set aside. In a medium size bowl, toss squash with 1 Tbs butter, salt and pepper. Place butternut squash onto a foil covered baking pan, and bake for 30 – 40 minutes or until soft. While squash is baking, place chopped onion and minced garlic in a large pot with the remaining 1 Tbs butter over medium heat until translucent and set aside. Once squash is soft, transfer from oven into pot with onion and garlic, and return heat to medium. Add broth and continue cook for 20 minutes. Add white beans and Greek yogurt to pot and stir with a large spoon until evenly mixed. With a hand masher, or immersion blender, carefully blend/mash soup until desired consistency is reached*. Season with another pinch salt and pepper, and cayenne pepper (optional for spice). Serve warm and garnish with fresh herbs from the farmer's market, or home garden.

Yoga Twists

Details:

Michael Hubbard, yoga instructor, The Sports Club/LA – San Francisco, shares a few yoga twists that provide numerous benefits to the body! He is a long recognized yoga and fitness instructor in San Francisco with more than 20 years of experience. Incorporating twists into your regular stretching regime will have myriad benefits on your body. You may be surprised at how these twists can ease muscle soreness in the back, increase flexibility, alleviate tension in the neck and back, as well as calm the mind.*

  • Before you even get out of bed, hug your knees in to your chest. Straighten your left leg and with your left hand on your right knee, twist over to the left and look over your right shoulder. Take five deep breaths. Use your inhale to lengthen the spine and your exhale to gently twist. Switch sides by taking your right leg straight and giving your left knee a big hug. With your right hand on the left knee, twist to the right as you look to the left. Again, take a few deep breaths, it should feel good!
  • After you finish your twist, draw your feet up so your ankles are underneath your knees. With your feet hip width apart, just roll up your spine one vertebrae at a time. Roll your hips up (bridge pose) on the inhale and roll it back down on your exhale. Repeat a couple of times. These two moves can help to keep the spine long and supple and prevent lower back issues.
  • Many people associate their spinal twists only with the spine. Every time you take a twist (and hold it) not only are you creating length into the spine, you are also squeezing the internal organs in a good way! The stomach, the liver and kidneys get wrung out of their toxins, and are filled with fresh oxygenated blood as you untwist. The twisting stimulates circulation, while it cleanses and refreshes. The muscles, tendons, and ligaments in our bodies need to stretched on a regular basis or they will overtime, shorten and begin to limit our mobility so twists are an easy tune-up! Try to get in a couple of twists in everyday! Footnotes: * You should speak to your doctor about this exercise if you have any disc issues or if you're pregnant.
